Sir Geoff Palmer, Scotland's first black professor, has died at 85. He moved from Jamaica and was a respected academic and human rights advocate.

Sir Geoff made new ways to use barley and won awards for science and human rights. He also studied Edinburgh's history with slavery.
In 2014, Sir Geoff was knighted for science and charity work. He became Jamaica's first Honorary Consul in Scotland and chancellor in 2021.
Many people say Sir Geoff was inspiring and stood for justice and fairness. He will be missed.
